Homer L. Hines Middle School Reviews

I was concerned about middle school and had heard negative things about hines in the past. I have found Hines to be just fine! my child is happy and we have had no problems...Nothing at all major! we had a schedule problem that was resolved quickly. Hines has a new principal as of last year and i had heard, and have found to be true, he is great! Dr. Smith is very attentive and cares about the students. We visited twice last year and attended open house and back to school night and dr. Smith was visible and talking to people every time we were there. He even took us on a tour himself during the summer visit. My daughter is in with a good group of teachers, she's challenged (a lot of homework) and making great grades! We couldn't be happier.

I went to the open houses during summer, heard the rave reviews about teachers, curriculum, communication. As of today. I've left a message in the office for the vp to call me concerning the purchase of some textbooks for home-never called back. The parent open house the week before school was a mess. No one at the door to greet anyone, tell us what to do or where to go. Did find 4 staff who told us it wasn't parents day at all ? My child didn't have a schedule yet and was told to just report to a home room teacher Mon and go from there. Got a bus number that was wrong. 1st week, he gets a schedule, then later it's changed with no notification or explanation. Lost Spanish, removed from Avid. E-mailed Avid teacher-NO ANSWER. Now Math changed. 'Why don't they want me in their class? Daddy?'

I spent my sixth and seventh grade years here and am now in the tenth grade living in Japan, but when I saw that I could rate my old middle school, I could not resist. First of all, most of the kids I knew were nice, but they were out of control. It was a wonder I learned anything in calss due to the fact the teachers were always being interrupted by loud and noisy students. Not to mention that the TAG class (advanced class) was the worst of all. In sixth grade I was in normal classes and I thought the kids were rude, but in seventh grade and I was in advanced calsses the kids were unbearable! They were all know-it-alls who mistreated those who were not in higher classes. All in all, the students ruined the experience for me.

I attented Hines Middle School all three years from 6-8. I just recently graduated from eigth grade, and i'm currently an eager rising freshmen. The academics in Hines all boils down to the teachers, 100%. In Hines it seemed like, to get the fullest of a subject, you would have to have a certain teacher. The schools discpline has defintley buckled down these last few years. There are security guards on each hall way, and the rules are defintley enforced. Overall the students are either really mean, quiet or extremley nice. I could totally be myself this year, and even won Best Personality. My eigth grade year was amazing! The Eighth Grade Formal dance was amazing, and everything about my year was fantastic. All i can say is do your best, and look foward to eighth grade. :]

I think that the academics of the school is excellent, but it's a matter of whether the other students pay attention or even care. The grades schouldn't be blamed on the teachers or the principal. The world of the students is not really realized by the teachers. It's drama and fighting that gets in the way; the struggle to be 'cool' rather than outcasted. This school needs more unity.

Hines has good teachers and bad as with any school but the bad ones there are bad as they cuss at students, are lax in teaching skills etc.The ideal of clothing being an issue is true, class, status are the topics of the day & if you cannot afford the latest $200 this or that, a kid is an outcast.I would think uniforms or a stricter dress code would work.Social time seems to outweigh class time from what i have seen with my 3 who attend and all of thier friends.

The main thing for my child is that I dont think they are diciplining the children and the teachers aren't doing their job very well. My daughter was very smart with great grades and since we came to this school they have dropped. Something needs to be done here.

Honestly I thought this was going to be a good school for my child where she could excell and be herself. But that was proven wrong my daughter could not be herself she wasnt getting the encouragement she needed from teachers. I would have never have sent my child there if I had seen the overall SOL scores. Now my daughter is highschool and her middle school years still affect her to this day in high school. That school wasnt a grade school it was more of a school to impress people with your clothes and style and my daughter did not fit in she was what they call an emo punk girl and she tells me everybody at that school was thugs or preps and they judged her before getting to know her.I hope you think about this. An upset parent.

This might be one of the worst schools my daughter has been to. They did not teach to their best ability, and the behavior is a menace. No control, and no profound students is what this school is created from!

Parents, A serious review of the policies and procedures for security, parental notification and the interactions with parents must be made. My concern is that illegal searches and seizures are being accomplished at Hines Middle School. Parents to date have not been notified that this is a practice condoned by the School Board. Security is paramount in all parents minds but I take great offense when my child is physically searched and seizure of his property is made illegally. I have personally made my views and concerns quite clear to the principal, yet I would like other parents to be advised of the situation since no letter is forthcoming from the school system. Thank you
